Sam Delauter, owner of Sunrise Diner in Ocean City, Maryland, found one way to combat the rising cost of inflation. He sells his soap through his diner as an alternate revenue source.
Bumble Soap by Sunrise Diner is a cleaning product with a twist – it’s made from the bacon grease left over from breakfast. Who knew that bringing home the bacon could keep your hands clean?
Leftover bacon grease can have a number of useful applications beyond collecting crud in the nearest mug or recycled can. Here are just a few options outside of the obvious cooking and flavour additive:
Firestarter
Even purified, bacon grease is flammable. This is a great opportunity to make use of that pesky dryer lint as well. Mix the two ingredients for an effective fire starter.
Scented Candles
With the addition of only a few soy wax flakes, you can have your very own bacon scented candle! Bacon grease is already flammable, the added wax helps hold shape and burn slowly so your entire house can stay smelling like morning primetime at your local diner.
And of course… Hand Soap!
When you combine forms of fat with an alkaline ingredient such as Lye, it goes through a process called saponification. The fat in the bacon grease provides an excellent moisturizer for your skin. Don’t stay out in the sun too long after using it though… unless you like your bacon extra crispy!
