When you’re behind the wheel on Tuesday morning, you might want to give yourself some extra time and keep a sharp lookout for students
RCMP Corporal Chris Marshall tells our newsroom it will be a busy day on the roads as kids walk, bike, and hop out of cars and buses to embark on a new school year.
“Continue to drive the way that you normally would. Be vigilant of what is going on around you,” Marshall says. “Obey all traffic signs, all speed limits. Just be more aware and be more cognizant of the fact that not only are there going to be school buses on the road, but there are also lots of children who walk to school.”
Marshall adds it’s especially important to pay attention to school zones and bus stops.
He says when you see the red lights flashing on a school bus, that means you need to stop and wait.
“For those folks that decide not to obey the flashing red lights, you can occur a $410 fine and have six demerit points added to your licence,” Marshall says.
School zones have no set hours, which means reduced speed limits can be enforced whenever kids are present.
