For the first time since the pandemic shut down in 2020, an international commercial flight is landing here in Halifax.
The Halifax Stanfield International Airport will welcome a Condor flight out of Frankfurt, Germany at around 8 p.m.
The German leisure airline says in a news release, it has been overwhelmed by travel requests since announcing it would take to Canadian skies again.
“Our guests have waited a long time to be able to travel across the big pond to North America again,” CEO Ralf Teckentrup says. “Within a few hours, we received so many requests for Condor flights that we decided at short notice to offer five connections per week from Frankfurt to Canada starting in September.”
Two of those flights will be offered for Halifax.
Air travel stalled at the airport in March 2020 when the first wave of the pandemic hit Halifax. Officials said it was the most challenging year the airport ever faced as it recorded it largest financial loss.
Pre-pandemic, Halifax Stanfield supported 5,600 jobs on-site and contributed over $3.8 billion annually to the Nova Scotia economy.
Since Tuesday, non-essential international travellers have been allowed back on Canadian soil so long as they’ve had the full course of a Health Canada approved COVID-19 vaccine.
Fully vaccinated Americans have been able to visit our country without isolating since August.
