Coal, cash, cars, and trees are on the agenda as the UN climate summit kicks off in Scotland.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is joining world leaders to talk climate change.
“We hear it from kids in Canada and around the world,” Trudeau says “We hear it from business owners. We hear it from individuals worried about the future. We need to do more as individuals, as countries, and as a world.”
This marks the first time Trudeau has attended a Conference of the Parties (COP) meeting since he became Prime Minister.
The last one was held in 2015 when the Paris Agreement was signed, which sets long-term climate goals for all nations.
The agreement includes a vow to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The goals is to limit the global temperature increase in this century to 2 degrees Celsius while also trying to limit the increase even further to 1.5 degrees.
Leaders’ summits are only held at every fifth COP meeting. The negotiations in Glasgow were pushed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year’s summit is being described as the “last best chance to get runaway climate change under control.”
