Have you ever had an Ocular Migraine? Cause it was the FREAKIEST THING EVER!!! To hear about the terrifying experience that sent Melody to the hospital (as well as many other Hot Country listeners, as it turns out!) listen @ 5:00 on the Melody & Forman podcast:
But what IS an ocular migraine?
According to Web MD, an ocular migraine involves vision loss or blindness in one eye for LESS than an hour. You can have it along with or after a migraine headache.
In Melody’s case, blurry patches turned into rainbow coloured zig zag patterns and her body started to feel a “buzz.” She was worried she was having a stroke!
So how do you know when it is just a migraine, or something more serious?
We are not medical experts, and we would ALWAYS advise you go to your doctor (or go to Emergency!) if you’re experiencing something out of the ordinary like this.
However, there are some ways to assess whether or not what you’re experiencing is a migraine vs a stroke.**
- When someone is experiencing a stroke, symptoms tend to come on suddenly. Whereas, with a migraine, they happen gradually. In Melody’s case, tiny little blurry spots got bigger and bigger and bigger and turned into new and different shapes.
- Additionally, a stroke is more likely to have what are called “negative” symptoms like completely losing sight or losing feeling in parts of your body. A migraine is more likely to have “positive” symptoms. So, added sensations, like auras or tingling in your skin.
**AGAIN, we are not doctors, so if you are ever experiencing ANYTHING new like this it is just better to be safe than sorry – see a doctor, or get yourself to emergency, do not just ‘wait and see’.
