The city is changing the way it issues winter parking bans.
There will be two zones this year: one for the Halifax Peninsula and Dartmouth core, and one for the surrounding suburban and rural areas.
This means the city can issue a winter ban parking in the denser core without impacting outlying areas.
According to a release from Halifax:
“In previous winter seasons, targeted snow removal in certain downtown areas was required although the overnight winter parking ban was not enforced. The change to create two zones will improve service delivery by leveraging overnight winter parking bans that can accommodate more targeted snow removal.”
So, the change is explicitly to allow Halifax to issue winter parking bans more often in the core of the city.
The zones are:
- Zone 1 – Central, covering the Halifax Peninsula inside of Joseph Howe Drive and downtown Dartmouth inside Highway 111.
- Zone 2 – Non-Central, covering much of suburban Halifax including Bedford and Sackville, as well as some of the adjoining rural areas.
Officials will be able to call, or end, a winter parking ban in both zones, or in one or the other.
The overnight winter parking ban takes effect Wednesday, until March 31.
The ban is enforced from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. during declared storms and snow removal.
