The cancellation of the World Junior Hockey Tournament was met with disappointment across Canada.
The IIHF pulled the plug yesterday due to rising COVID-19 cases among players and staff.
Fans of the Halifax Mooseheads got to watch three of their players at the tournament in Edmonton and Red Deer.
Captain Elliot Desnoyers made Team Canada, while imports Senna Peeters and Attilio Biasca represented Austria and Switzerland, respectfully.
Mooseheads Head Coach Sylvain Favreau says he was disappointed to hear the news.
“Very disappointed for all the athletes, and certainly our fellow Mooseheads, as the tournament comes to an end for them. We are very proud of their progression to take part in such a prestigious tournament,” says Favreau.
Speaking about Desnoyers, Favreau says he’s worked hard to be where he is.
“He’s not only a great hockey player, but a great leader and person. I’ve watched him progress from the U17 level. You feel devastated, not only for him but for all the kids playing in this tournament as well.”
Favreau says he’s looking forward to having the players back in Halifax when the schedule resumes.
The QMJHL announced today that the holiday break has been extended until January 14th.
