Police in Halifax are getting a 10 per cent pay bump.
Negotiations on a wage dispute between Halifax Regional Municipality and the Halifax Regional Police Association, the union representing officers, broke down in 2020.
An arbitration board awarded the increase on December 22.
It’s broken down into eight bi-annual raises over the four years of the contract:
- 1.25 per cent effective April 1, 2020
- 1.25 per cent effective October 1, 2020
- 1.25 per cent effective April 1, 2021
- 1.25 per cent effective October 1, 2021
- 1.25 per cent effective April 1, 2022
- 1.25 per cent effective October 1, 2022
- 1.25 per cent effective April 1, 2023
- 1.25 per cent effective October 1, 2023
The raise is retroactive to the beginning of the contract, so the city will have to dole out back-pay for officers, likely in a lump sum payment.
Police are among the best paid employees in the city. More than half of police officers make over $100,000 a year.
