The premier says he will not tolerate a blockade at Nova Scotia’s border with New Brunswick.
Tim Houston is responding to reports of a proposed border shutdown this Saturday in solidarity with the trucker convoy heading to our nation’s capital to protest vaccine mandates.
“My message to anyone planning to blockade a highway, don’t do it,” Houston says. “Just don’t do it. Nova Scotians have no patience for highway blockades and personally many people would know I have even less.”
Houston removed MLA Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin from the Tory caucus for her role in a border blockade of the Trans-Canada Highway in June.
Earlier this month, the feds implemented a mandate requiring truckers to show proof of vaccination in order to avoid quarantine when crossing into the country.
The vaccine mandate has sparked outrage from some in the industry.
A convoy of big rigs rolled out of Enfield on Thursday morning, surrounded by supporters, as Atlantic Canadian Truckers move to join their counterparts from across the country in the protest.
The truckers are set to meet in Ottawa and converge on Parliament Hill on Saturday.
Houston says it’s a tough time for many right now, but believes getting vaccinated is the best path forward.
“The vaccines are effective. Those that can get vaccinated, should get vaccinated,” Houston says. “That’s the path forward, the path forward does not involve blocking highways. It involves getting vaccinated.”
