When you’re cruising across the Macdonald Bridge you’re going to notice a big yellow and blue flag on display.
It’s the national flag for Ukraine.
Officials say it’s to show support for Canadian Ukrainians who are worried about their loved ones.
“The idea came from our staff and there was a quick consensus that this was a small gesture we could make to support Ukrainian Canadians who are worried about their friends and family,” Halifax Harbour Bridges General Manager & CEO Steve Snider says in a news release.
Snider adds it also serves as a symbol of welcome to all Ukrainians who recently arrived in Nova Scotia.
“We fly a very limited number of flags from our towers,” Snider says. “The spot is reserved for only the most important occasions and to show our support for causes that touch the lives of every Canadian.”
For decades, the bridge towers were reserved exclusively for the Canadian flag.
Over the last two years, the Nova Scotia flag has soared there along with flags recognizing Emancipation Day and the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.
The Ukrainian flag will sit atop the bridge tower until the fall.
