Photos are resurfacing on social media of a Portuguese man o’ war found at Lawrencetown Beach.
And that’s causing some confusion for people.
A spokesperson for the Department of Natural Resources confirmed the photo is actually from 2020.
Adele Poirier says staff at Lawrencetown Beach haven’t confirmed any sightings of Portuguese man o’ war yet this year.
However, staff have seen them on that beach each year in the past five years, she said.
The Portuguese man o’ war is related to the jellyfish and can be up to 40 or 50 metres long, although the average is closer to nine metres.
They can pose serious health risks while dead or alive, such as stings, welts and allergic reactions.
If you do spot one of these critters on the beach, you should avoid it and report it to lifeguards or DNR.
