People with no where to go when it gets cold will be able to access a shelter, funded by the province, this winter.
The North Park Street Shelter site, located at 2029 North Park St. , will open for overnight stays on Oct. 1, with the goal of expanding to include day programming in the near future.
“This is a vitally important investment in helping some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Together, between orders of government and the community sector, we can continue to find new ways to support those who are unhoused, Mayor Mike Savage said in a news release.
It will start with 25 all-gender beds, with plans to grow to 40 beds by mid-November.
Non-profit volunteer organization, 902 Man Up, will staff the shelter and provide on-site help connecting people to community-based services and programs, such as housing support, social workers and harm reduction supports.
That service provider that has been working with the Province to staff the temporary shelter at the Brunswick Street Mission, which will be replaced with the new North Park Street Shelter.
People who use the space will be in charge of picking a more permanent name for the shelter.
