We have a rich history of mining gold here in Nova Scotia. We still mine it to this day and quite a bit of it too.
I came across this post on Facebook Marketplace selling a gold miner’s kit in Baddeck from the 1840’s. If the post is still active you can see it HERE.
Here is a detailed write up on the items…
“1840s wild west, gold miners kit, it dosnt have an official name, but this was basically everything you needed to survive going out to search for gold. More of a upper class kit, this has some very expensive pieces for the time, the Pun is a 1845 Alan & Wheeler hammer bar boot P.i.s. t.o.l, in beautiful condition, the guard around the trigger was missing and a crude homemade one was added, giving it character in my opinion. Has a early Photograph, of 3 men, one was likely the owner, no name but the photo is 1840-50s era, not glass or tin but made of stone with a reflective top, one of the earliest forms of photography. Comes with, gold scale, lead shots, shot making tool, power w.h.a.l.e horn, powder flask, eye glasses, miners head lamp, a book printed in 1815, coin purse, ram rod matxhes and caps, and even a bit of gold. I do have more photos but couldn’t add them, this is an incredible piece of history, these were not sold as kits. This was made up by the man who owned it, there in a name inside the book Henry whittlesey from Catskill New York. Even has his book plate stamp inside from his private library. No information has bee found on him, likely he would have come from wealth. One of a kind piece if history, asking 2000$”
