It’s been 25 years since the release of Aqua’s certified multi-platinum “Barbie Girl”
The band, which features vocalists René Dif and Lene Nystrøm as well as keyboardist Søren Rasted (and formerly Claus Norreen), released “Barbie Girl” as the third single off its Aquarium album in 1997.
In June, the group made a surprise appearance for Paris Hilton’s DJ set during Dreamland Pride in June and even headlined a show in New York for the first time in 20 years!
Aqua then performed two Canada concerts in Niagara Falls and Vancouver before heading to Los Angeles for a headlining performance at the Belasco Theatre
Barbie Girl has blown up in the best way since the days of aqua, being sued by Mattel for some of their questionable lyrics. This led to a disclaimer being added that informed listeners the hit “was not created or approved by the makers of the doll.”
Despite all of that, Aqua will be embarking on the Barbie World Tour Nov. 12 in Seattle, and ending off in LA at the Hollywood Palladium on December 20th
