The dreaded Yellow Pillow — the adult equivalent to a well-loved plushy. You know the one, it’s thin, it’s lumpy, it has a unique smell, and somehow it is the comfiest pillow you have ever owned. Why do so many of us have such an emotional attachment to ours? There are many reasons, but here is why you should NOT hold on to such an old relic.
Experts recommend switching out your pillows on an annual basis. Some say you can push it to two or three years if you wash them or use a pillow protector. Replacements are necessary for one significant reason — yellow is not the colour of your love.
Pillows collect all of the wonderful things that come off of our head as we sleep. This doesn’t just mean the drool dripping from the corners of your mouth, it also includes dust that floats around your room or collects on your head throughout the day. It also collects dead skin cells from your body as you roll around on it during an eventful beauty sleep, and with dust and allergens comes mites.
30% of a pillows weight may consist of dead skin cells, dust and allergens, dust mites and their feces. None of which are ideal to hold around your facial orifices for any period of time.
If you can’t bring yourself to give up your beloved Yellow Pillow or if you’ve avoided shopping for a replacement due to the cost of inflation, experts recommend washing your pillow at least once a month.
