A new supportive housing option is in progress for women and gender-diverse individuals in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). The former Waverley Inn at 1266 Barrington St. will be repurposed to accommodate 32 individuals, with priority for those on the By-Name List currently experiencing homelessness in HRM.
Partnering with Grafton Developments, the Province of Nova Scotia is investing $1.9 million for staffing, programming, and leasing costs. Grafton Developments will defer its development plans for the property for at least three years.
Trevor Boudreau, Minister of Community Services, emphasized private-sector support for vulnerable Nova Scotians. “This partnership is another example of how the private sector is supporting government efforts to help our most vulnerable Nova Scotians,” he stated.
YWCA Halifax will provide on-site assistance, including referrals to mental health and addictions counseling, employment services, and skills training. The duration of stay and services provided will be tailored to tenants’ specific needs.
The facility is expected to open in December.
Miia Suokonautio, Executive Director of YWCA Halifax, commented on the collaboration: “YWCA Halifax is excited to work with the Ghosn family, the Province, and HRM to offer long-term affordable housing with on-site supports for women. The partnership between the Ghosn family, the Province, HRM, and the YWCA is what has made this option available. Collaboration is crucial in addressing the housing crisis.”
Jason and Jordan Ghosn of Grafton Developments also shared their perspective: “As local developers with an interest in strengthening our community, we recognize the importance of working with the Province to come up with creative solutions aimed at addressing the current housing crisis. By postponing our development on the Waverley Inn, we aim to positively affect change. Grafton Developments looks forward to this collaboration, and we are pleased that our property will be utilized to help those in need during these challenging times.”
