Tipping is technically a courtesy but some professions rely on tips to get by. Particularly in provinces whose serving wages are below standard wage. However some people have some pretty strong feelings both for and against tipping.
Today with Jean-Eva from the Book of Love Canada, we discussed a situation from a listener that talks about the person they have been seeing and how generous they are especially when it comes to going out. During their last outing, the listener says they realized their date does not tip and when asking him about it, he proceeded to go on a 10 minute rant about why he doesn’t tip.
As a former server myself, I try to tip as much as I can when I can and if the service isn’t GREAT, they get 10%. We are living in a crunch right now and some people are working two or three extra jobs to make ends meet. Exhaustion doesn’t make for great service but a good tip out could definitely change their day. But I also believe that no one should feel obligated to tip.
Some people think that tipping is only necessary when service is outstanding and exceptional while others feel like they shouldn’t have to tip at all.
