Halifax Regional Municipality will not be hosting their typical New Years celebrations in Grand Parade this year nor will City Hall be opening its doors for its annual levee, instead the Emera Oval will be home to the festivities for the first time ever.
Mayor Mike Savage says “Something didn’t seem quite right to be celebrating the levee while people literally 100 yards away are living in tents”. To support the efforts going towards assisting Halifax’s current unhoused population, city council has approved donating the $8,500 that would have been spent on the levee to the North End Community Health Centre to provide meals for people living on the streets.
As for ringing in the New Year, Halifax will be hosting a night of Nova Scotia musical talent, a celebration of 50 years of Hip Hop and a double display of fireworks — first at 9pm to close out the all ages free skate, and the final show to commemorate the start of 2024 right at midnight.
