Every Friday in in the 7am and 9am hours, we go over six simple slang terms to start your weekend off with. This weekend’s big day surrounding one of America’s favourite sports calls for some clarity on what exactly those announcers are talking about.
Nickelback: No, the band of the same name will not be performing at this year’s half-time show. It is the cornerback or safety who serves as the additional defensive back in a nickel defense (any defensive alignment that uses five defensive backs).
Blitz: This is when the defense of a team sends an angry mob after the quarterback. Typically, a player that isn’t on defense abandons their post and joins defense in rushing the passer.
Red zone: The nickname for the area spanning the last 20 yards an offense has to move to score a touchdown – from the defense’s 20-yard line to the goal line. – Or what you might call the box from which Taylor Swift will be watching.
Tacklebox: The area between two tackles

Sam, Mike, Will: Named for positions that start with the same letter in a formation where there are 3 players in row. the strong-lined linebacker is Sam, the middle linebacker is Mike, and the weak-lined linebacker is Will.
