Halifax Transit is calling for an increase in fees to $3.00 if you pay with cash for a single ride.
It’s an increase of a quarter for adults while youth and seniors would pay $2.25.
The hike would generate about $700,000 in revenue for the city this year and more than $1.2 million with more riders in the years ahead.
Any fare increases would still need to be approved with the city budget, but some councillors are already expressing concerns over the potential hike.
Transit staff will return to council with options in the next few weeks.
Fares last went up in 2019, and an increase was proposed last year as well, but ultimately voted down.
Overall, the transit budget is coming in at $68 million. It is up about $8 million over last year which is mainly due to higher salaries.
