A baby was recently delivered on an Air Canada Flight after taking off from St. Lucia before diverting to an emergency landing in Bermuda. Lucky for the mother-to-be, there were two doctors aboard the plane who were able to assist in delivering the baby, who arrived before the plane landed. If the baby was born before the plane landed, what exactly does their birth certificate say?
If a birth takes place in the air over Canadian airspace, the child automatically is granted Canadian citizenship. Outside of Canadian airspace, this becomes a case-by-case basis depending on a number of factors from who owns the plane to where the parents are from. Canada loves Canadians so it’s probably safe to assume that this instance involving an Air Canada plane, the child was granted a Canadian citizenship.
According to Best Citizenships, a baby born over international airspace in most countries will actually be stated as being born “in the air” and their birth certificate will be registered as an Unregistered Birthright Citizenship. There have only been approximately 75 cases of airborne births so it makes sense that a special circumstance is granted a special citizenship.
