With iconic artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Anne Murray, Rita McNeil, and the Rankin Family coming out of Nova Scotia, it’s no surprise that the JUNO awards included a number of homegrown wins.
Singer/Songwriter FEIST – known both for her solo hits like 1234 and Mushaboom and being a former member of alt rock band Broken Social Scene – takes home her fourteenth JUNO award, this time for Adult Alternative Album of the Year.
Jamaican-born, Halifax-based Reggae sensation Jah’Mila was nominated for Reggae Recording of the Year and while she didn’t take the win, she did take the hearts of the JUNO crowds with an ensemble of Atlantic Artists performing the coastal collaboration East Coast Family.
Not all of those making waves in the music industry are active recording and performing artists themselves, Halifax local Entertainment Lawyer and Manager Chip Sutherland was recognized for his efforts in the nation’s music scene with the esteemed Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award. Sutherland was behind the signing of Sloan’s record deal with Geffen Records in 1992 in an era where Sloan was making evolutionary changes to their sound and required Sutherland’s help during creative differences with the label.
