Halifax police are still looking for a 49-year-old man after receiving reports he was carrying a gun and threatening people in Dartmouth.
In an update Tuesday evening, police remain in the Gaston Road area, but do not think David John Campbell is still there and do not believe he is a threat to the general public.
“We don’t have any information to suggest that he intends to hurt anyone else,” according to Halifax Regional Police spokesperson John MacLeod.
“There has been no information provided to investigators thus far to indicate that the suspect has any intentions of injuring members of the public however given the possibility that he may still be in possession of a firearm we are asking that, If you see him, do not approach and call 911.” MacLeod continued.
A heavy police presence remains in the Gaston Road area, including dog teams.
Campbell is white, about 6‘0 and 170 pounds with tattoos on both arms and was last seen wearing a dark jacket and jeans.
The first calls came about 9:20 a.m., but police believe he ran from the scene before they arrived.
Gaston Road has since reopened to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
If anyone sees the man, they should call 9-1-1 and not approach.
Dartmouth South Academy
Dartmouth South Academy was in a hold and secure as a precautionary measure for several hours, according to a social media post from a parent group for the school.
The hold and secure was lifted after police advised the school it was safe, according to another post.
Students who normally would leave the school to get lunch had lunch provided, the post says, and afternoon routines and dismissal will continue as usual.
A hold and secure means that students and staff can move freely within the building. However, people coming and going from the building are limited.
A lockdown means that students and staff are isolating in secure locations because of threat within the building, the document says.
Transit
Halifax Transit route 62 was detoured away from Gaston Road but resumed regular service.
