The city is lifting the interim tag off its police chief.
Don MacLean will take over on a permanent basis starting next week.
He’s been the acting chief for almost a year and has been with the Halifax Regional Police force for more than 30 years.
“The relationship that Halifax Regional Police has with the Halifax region and its vibrant and growing communities is very important to me. It was with great pride that I assumed the role of active chief last year, allowing me to further build and strengthen those relationships,” said MacLean.
He is the successful candidate after a nation-wide search was launched to replace former chief Dan Kinsella following his retirement.
“Through his years of service and dedication to professional policing and community, Chief MacLean has demonstrated his ability to lead Halifax Regional Police”, said Mayor Mike Savage. “Council is pleased to have him in the role on a permanent basis and congratulate him on his success.”
MacLean is from Halifax and served as the first Diversity Officer for the municipal police force from 2004 to 2006 and went on to become the Executive Officer to the Chief and later the Human Resources Officer.
He went to university at King’s, St. Mary’s and Dalhousie.
