This week we highlight Mary Read from the Bide Awhile Animal Shelter for Furbaby Friday on Hot Country 103.5fm.
Mary Read is a sweet 4 month old kitten who loves to explore and watch the world from the window. She does have a grade 3 heart murmur.
Heart murmurs come on a scale from 1-6, with 1 being the faintest and 6 being the most intense. They are an unusual sound made by the blood around a cat’s heart – instead of a strong heartbeat, a vet might hear a swooshing sound.
By itself, a heart murmur does not necessarily mean that there is an issue with the heart function. Some cats experience intermittent heart murmurs that show up when the heat rate speeds up due to stress like a vet visit.
Innocent heart murmurs are often found in rapid growing kittens but will usually be outgrown by 6 months old. Heart murmurs can also change as a cat grows and matures.
