Smoke filled the street early Friday afternoon as firefighters worked to put out a smoldering fire on Quinpool Road.
Crews doused a pile of debris with water as an excavator tore down what was left.
District Chief Brad Connors says the fire spread into the walls and attic.
“The fire got in the walls and up into the attic, which is hard for us to fight, unless we can get the walls and stuff torn apart early,” he said.
At about midnight, smoke alarms went off at a mixed-use building in the 6000 block of Quinpool Road, and firefighters headed to the scene, according to a social media post from the Halifax Professional Fire Fighters union.
Some members from Station 2 in the South End found a working fire and started trying to put it out, the post read. They upgraded to a second alarm to bring in more resources, which lead to 35 firefighters responding to the fire throughout the night, the union said.
Connors said everyone inside was evacuated and no one was hurt.
Quinpool road is closed between Preston and Oxford Street as they put out the remains of the fire.
