With the weather getting warmer, the city is launching a more environmentally friendly way of getting around.
Hundreds of e-scooters and e-bikes are now available to rent in various locations in HRM.
The micromobility program is in partnership with Bird Canada, an organization that has already launched in 27 other cities across Canada.
“We are excited to welcome Bird Canada’s e-scooter and e-bike program to Halifax,” said Mayor Andy Fillmore. “This innovative partnership aligns with HRM’s commitment to building a sustainable and accessible transportation network for our residents. With the introduction of this fleet, we’re improving mobility, reducing our carbon footprint, and supporting a greener, healthier future for our community.”
How it works
There are 300 e-scooters and 300 e-bikes around the city to choose from.
To get going you need to download the app, find a vehicle, then scan to unlock before you take off.
Vehicles are approved for roads 50 km/h or lower, with a beginner mode that caps at 25 km/h.
You can also take them on multi-use paths, bike lanes and designated park areas, but not sidewalks.
Payment
You can pay per minute or buy ride passes.
Bird Canada has also partnered with United Way Maritimes to provide access to the program to communities that need it the most.
This means discounted rides with be available if you are on a low income, a senior, veteran, healthcare worker or someone facing transportation barriers and are at least 16 years old.
“We’re proud to support Bird Canada in bringing inclusive, accessible transportation options to our communities,” said Sarah Napier, President and CEO of United Way. “Together we’re helping to build a more connected and equitable Halifax.”
