A public meeting Monday evening to discuss recommendations from city staff to delay changing the bylaws that would protect Dartmouth Cove from infilling.
In a post on social media, Save Dartmouth Cove says this is unacceptable.
“This is so WRONG!!! When the Northwest Arm was under threat, HRM acted quickly with strong bylaws, backed fully by the province, the federal government and then -MP Andy Fillmore,” reads the post.
Regional Council passed a motion in January 2024 to protect the Arm from infilling and have been assessing the feasibility of adopting similar regulations for Dartmouth Cove.
According to the city staff report, they want to defer any bylaw changes until the waterfront plan is complete.
Infilling the cove has been a hot button topic in the community for years with the possibility of nearly 100,000 cubic metres of pyritic slate being dumped into the water – nearly three football fields.
Atlantic Road Construction and Paving plans to do the project but needs federal approval.
Transport Canada gave the thumbs up for the project but rescinded it last June, while the Department of Oceans and Fisheries has not yet given the ok.
Ahead of Tuesday’s council meeting, Councillor Sam Austin says on social media, he will ask council to go with an alternative to delaying the bylaw and limit infill to protect the Cove.
The public meeting is Monday at 7 p.m. at the Mic Mac Aquatic Club.
