Young curlers in Dartmouth will miss out on playing as a team this year.
The Dartmouth Curling Club has indefinitely shut down after a massive leak ruined their ice-making process.
Kim Piccott says her daughter’s team of four got really close as friends last year.
“It’s not just a building. It’s that everyone now is going to be satellite in different locations, and we’re just not going to have that close knit community like we had,” said Piccott.
She says the team named themselves ‘Curl Power’ and even had team jackets made.
Then they got the news that the Dartmouth curling Club would be indefinitely closed. Because demand is so high for curling spots and because some clubs have already started their seasons, some girls from the team started searching for whichever spots they could find.
Now two former teammates are already signed up to play at separate locations, she said, splitting up her daughter’s old team.
Piccott herself signed up to join a team, but she was waitlisted because it was already full. She has reached out to another club to see if she can play there and hopes they will have a spot.
Although the future of the club is uncertain, Piccott says she will stick by it. She and some other parents asked the club whether they could start a fundraiser, perhaps a GoFundMe page, but Piccott says they asked them to wait until the club explores some more of their options.
She said the club has been a staple of the community for a long time, with generations playing together, grandparents, grandkids and great grandkids.
“So it is very unique in that sense. It is a wonderful sport,” said Piccott.
“I would hate to see something so important to so many Dartmouthians, to so many people in Dartmouth, just fold.”
