Nova Scotia has awarded 31 paramedics for dedicating their lives to helping others when they need it most.
The Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medals were issued on Tuesday.
The province says the medal is an honour that recognizes the paramedics’ long-standing dedication to the health and safety of their fellow Nova Scotians.
“The individuals recognized this year demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the health and safety of all residents,” wrote Lt-Gov. Mike Savage in a news release.
“Because of their selfless acts, Nova Scotians receive care and compassion in moments that are fraught with uncertainty and fear. Their work saves lives and contributes to the well-being of our communities.”
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals can be nominated for the award by anyone—their peers or the public. They must have served at least 20 years, including 10 in an EMS position that “involves risk,” the release says.
Brian Duncan, an advanced care paramedic who received a medal on Tuesday, says it is an honour to be nominated and recognized for that work.
“Service to community and helping people is a driving factor for everyone involved in EMS,” said Duncan.
