It is a league providing women with the opportunity to play at an elite level.
The Maritime Women’s Basketball Association (MWBA) will consist of six teams, three in Nova Scotia, and three in New Brunswick.
Teams include:
- Port City Fog
- Moncton Mystics
- Fredericton Freeze
- Halifax Hornets
- Halifax Thunder
- Windsor Edge
League founder Brad Janes, who also owns the Fredericton Freeze, said a schedule is set and all six teams are ready to go.
“COVID-19 is that lurking nemesis in numerous ways, but we are planning to play in some shape or form, and the MWBA will unfold this year,” said Janes.
During the interview, Janes mentioned there are plans to expand the league in the future.
“We are a Maritime league, and we had conversations with P.E.I. groups, and a late entry came in as well, we want to be on the island, but right now that’s in the planning stage for 2023,” he said.
The MWBA is doing its best to promote women in sport, he said, with most teams having women on their coaching staff.
“As well, there’s a lot of talent out there … a lot of these women that will be playing in the league their careers finished as 22-year-olds, so they didn’t even get an opportunity to play in their prime.”
“I think that’s what this league is going to provide, it’s an opportunity to continue playing because why should they stop playing at 22 just because they finished university, and didn’t go to Europe to play professional,” added Janes.
The first game is set for April 21 between the Moncton Mystics and the Port City Fog.
