Rain or shine, the popular Clam Harbour Sandcastle Competition is back after two years of being turfed, due to COVID-19 and the Provincial Government State of Emergency.
Prizes of $75-$200 – and bragging rights – are up for grabs to whoever participates in the competition and designs the best sandcastle or sculptures, with categories for both kids and adults.
In the past, the event has drawn crowds of about 10,000, according to its webpage. You can also find more details on categories and prizes there.
Whether you’re heading to the beach to watch, or participating, you’ll want to go early to get good parking.
Registration is available on-site only, starting when gates open at 9 a.m. on Aug. 21.
there is a fee of $10 for adult groups to participate in the competition and no fee for children or youth.
To build a sandcastle or sand sculpture, participants may use:
- your hands, and hand tools including shovels, spatulas, rakes, pails, etc.
- any natural objects found on the beach such as driftwood, shells, seaweed, and rocks
You may not use: - Cement, adhesive, metal or timber supports, food colouring, flags, paint or other non-beach or man-made materials (besides the items named above “You May Use”).
Organizers have arranged a shuttle bus to and from the beach, but they say dog’s aren’t allowed to ride – with an exception made for service dogs.
First Aid personnel and provincial lifeguards will be at the beach. All you need to bring is sunscreen, buckets and a creative eye.
