It’s stressful enough to see that you were a dollar or two away from seeing that last bill go through, the bank now charges you a “Non-Sufficient Funds” (NSF) fee which ranges between $45 and $50 depending on the financial institution you are with.
This is the reality for many Canadians who are currently facing the squeeze of an economic crisis and that’s also why TD Bank was facing scrutiny over the last few years after overcharging some customers facing NSF fee charges. This led to a class-action $15.9 million lawsuit after prosecutors highlighted situations like the case of lead-plaintiff Tyler Dufault, whom the bank charged $96 in fees for being 45 cents short on a PayPal bill.
Eligibility includes TD bank clients who were active account users between February 2019 and November 2023 and were double-charged an NSF fee at some point within that time. Eligible recipients have started receiving their estimated $88 payouts beginning today.
