The community is taking back the Africville park after the recent horrific shooting.
An event hosted by 902 Man Up, called “Taking It Back: We Are All Africville”, brought people to Africville Park, with free food and drinks, bouncy castles and games, all in the name of educating people and stopping gun violence, according to a social media post.
More than two weeks ago, five people were shot at the park during the 41st family reunion. Every year families with Africville heritage would come together at the park. The City of Halifax forced them out in the 1960s to build the MacKay Bridge.
But African Nova Scotian Affairs Minister Twila Grosse said the community is strong and resilient.
If they come together and say Africville will be safe again because they want it to be, then “it will happen,” she told reporters.
She was pleased and impressed that the community rallied together so quickly after such a tragic event, she said.
“It’s a safe place, and so it’s very troubling, very heartbreaking to see the events,” she said.
Grosse added that her department is reaching out to the community to see how they could help and to work with other groups to support Africville.
