You may be one of thousands who will now have fluoride in your drinking water.
Halifax Water says they have put it back into the supply that comes from Pockwock Lake.
Due to equipment issues, fluoride had not been added to either the Pockwock Lake or Lake Major treatment plants for more than a year, but residents were not aware.
A couple of weeks ago, the utility admitted it should have been more open about the lack of treatment with community members.
Adding fluoride is not mandatory, but in a media release, Halifax Water says their Board of Commissioners recommend it based on support from the Nova Scotia Dental Association and Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine.
“Halifax Water remains committed to continuing fluoridation as directed by our Board of Commissioners in consultation with Public Health.”
Fluoride is still not back at the Lake Major facility, but the utility says, they are currently looking at options.
“These range from standalone renovations to accommodate additional tanks to solutions that are added to the much larger water supply enhancement projects planned for the water treatment plant over the next 5-10 years (the timing of restoration of the fluoride system may be sooner).”
Once the options are refined, they will be taken to the Board of Commissioners to decide next steps.
