Canada’s labour movement is looking to the federal leaders for support and protection of workers impacted by trade tariffs.
The Canadian Labour Congress estimates over one million jobs are at risk.
President Bea Bruske says the election is a turning point
“Workers want to know that their leaders have their backs,” says Bruske.
“They want to know that there’s a plan to support them through this crisis and that there’s a strategy to stand up to President Trump.”
Bruske says they are not endorsing any one party but do support measures offered by the Liberals and NDP.
She does express concern with Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, whom Bruske says appears to be focused on cutting services.
“This is not the time for austerity. Canadian workers need strong leadership. We need a real plan that stands up for workers that protects our jobs, that safeguards our livelihoods and our communities.”
The labour group would like to see investments in public healthcare and affordable housing.
It also calls for cutting off U.S. access to key Canadian resources, such as electricity, lumber, critical minerals and oil and gas, until tariffs are lifted.
