The federal election is almost here, and a community is hub is doing what it can to help prepare residents in Dartmouth North.
The Speak Up! Show Up! campaign is underway at The North Grove.
Laura Horn is the executive director and tells us it’s an opportunity to learn not only how to register to vote, but how to vote and meet the candidates in that riding.
“We have a team who are connecting with people during our weekly breakfast to talk to them, make sure they’re registered to vote, answer questions,” says Horn.
She adds, they also have a lot of resources at the centre where people can learn about the structure of the Canadian government, as well as conversation starters.
Main concerns
One of the main concerns from community members who visit The North Grove, is food insecurity.
“We know that one in four Nova Scotians are facing food insecurity. That’s among the highest rates in the country. Ninety-eight per cent of people coming to The North Grove are relying on [us] as an important source of food for them,” says Horn.
“We also know that 86 per cent of people in this community are renting and so they’re feeling that squeeze. The affordability crisis, the rising costs across groceries and everything else. Rent is also impacting people,” adds Horn.
Meeting the candidates
There will be a chance to meet the candidates.
Horn says the candidates move around from table to table to connect with community members.
“[A] chance for candidates to hear from people who are directly impacted by their policies and a chance for people to ask questions,” adds Horn.
She says, they generally get a good turnout.
Meet the Candidates is at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 22.
