An investigation is now underway after a school bus caught on fire in the Halifax-area.
It was in Hammonds Plains on Carnoustie Drive, just after 3 p.m., Thursday.
In an emailed statement to our newsroom, Lindsey Bunin from the Halifax Regional Centre for Education says, the driver noticed smoke coming from under the hood.
“The driver immediately stopped, evacuated the bus and moved the children to a safe location. The bus provider dispatch called emergency services, who were at the scene within minutes. The front end of the bus caught fire,” says Bunin.
The principal and vice-principal at Hammonds Plains Consolidated School arrived at the scene quickly and stayed with the students until their families arrived.
Bunin says the children remained calm and followed the driver’s lead in a “very scary situation”.
“We are grateful to the driver, school leaders and families for handling the situation with great care. HRCE’s Transportation Team is working closely with the bus provider, Southland, to understand why this happened,” says Bunin.
