Businesses in Bayers Lake have stepped up to help support crews who are battling the Susies Lake wildfire.
Councillor Jean St-Amand tells our newsroom several have been really great volunteering their time and effort, donating things like food – Montana’s is one of them.
The owner of the restaurant, he says, happens to be his neighbour.
“She decided to bring some of her staff in and put that small team to work. She called me and wanted to find out how would she go about donating meals to the first responders,” says St-Amand.
He says, a few calls later, the arrangements were made, more than 100 meals made and the reception was wonderful
“They were incredibly grateful by the support that they were receiving,” says St- Amand. “It was not just the firefighters in DNR, but people at the Emergency Operations Centre, the police officers that were barricading some of the immediate entrances and exits to the area. They were thrilled and very grateful.”
He says there were at least 70 crew members on scene at the time.
Thursday evening, The Department of Natural Resources was prepared to supply food.
Common Sense
Halifax Mayor Andy Fillmore tells us it is important during this time to use common sense.
“We are blessed where we live. There are all kinds of ways to be outdoors on these hot summer days that do not involve needing to be in wooded areas. You can go to a beach. You can go to a lake,” says Fillmore.
He says, for anyone doing construction, it is important to be careful when refueling and the equipment cool down first.
“If we follow directives, we can get through this together safely,” says Fillmore.
According to HRM, Susies Lake fire is still being held with crews making progress, as of publication.
The next update is Thursday evening.
