Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially recognized Palestine as a state, according to a post on X, Sunday.
In a statement, Carney says he offers our partnership in “building the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and State of Israel.”
Canada will now join more than 140 other UN members to recognize Palestine as a state and comes with Carney set to meet other world leaders at the UN General Assembly.
“While Canada is under no illusions that this recognition is a panacea, this recognition is firmly aligned with the principals of self-determination and fundamental human rights reflected in the United Nations Charter, and the consistent policy of Canada for generations,” says Carney.
The announcement was originally made in July but was made conditional that Palestine abides by a few things.
That includes reforming its governance, holding general elections in 2026 “in which Hamas can play no part” and demilitarizing the Palestinian state — terms Carney said that Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas has committed to.
President of the United States, Donald Trump, responded to this in July making it clear it could result badly regarding a trade deal.
“That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh’ Canada!!!” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.
Carney says Canada will “intensify efforts to support the Palestinian’s Authority’s implementation of this reform agenda, on which progress has already been made.”
