A former broadcast journalist and member of the Snowbirds will receive a posthumous military honour Monday.
Capt. Jennifer Casey was the public affairs officer for the aerial demonstration team from 2019 to 2020.
Casey was killed in an accident in Kamloops, B.C., in 2020.
The Halifax native will receive a Meritorious Service Medal from Governor General Mary Simon.
Casey helped raise the profile of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) through creative social media campaigns for the Snowbirds and the CF-18 demonstration team.
She was the architect of Operation INSPIRATION, a campaign during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The operation brought the Snowbirds across the country, performing flyovers to raise spirits during the early lockdowns.
To date, it’s the largest social media outreach by the CAF. More than 25 million viewers were informed about the CAF’s ongoing activities.
“Her tireless efforts had a truly positive impact on Canadians during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said a release from the Governor General’s office.
Casey is among more than 40 CAF members who are being honoured.
