The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has cleared a New Glasgow Regional Police Officer of any potential wrongdoing after a man’s shoulder was broken during an arrest.
Along with the result of the investigation, SiRT has revealed more details about the incident, which happened on April 27.
They say the officer tried to pull over a truck on Temperance Street in New Glasgow that fit the description of a stolen vehicle.
Police say the driver, whose license was suspended, sped off and ran a stop sign, nearly causing a crash, so the officer followed for some time with his lights and sirens off, maintaining some distance.
The truck kept speeding and eventually ran another stop sign, where he collided with a taxi. He got out on foot and ran away.
The officer found him shortly after. Following the arrest, the suspect was taken to a hospital, where doctors found he had a broken collarbone.
SiRT says no one in the taxi was hurt.
The New Glasgow Police referred the case to SiRT the same day and after an investigation, the director determined there were “no reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence.”
SiRT investigates any police cases involving death, serious injury, intimate partner violence or other matters of public interest.
