We are just days away from the official opening of the aquarium in Halifax.
According to the website of The Beaty Centre for Marine Biodiversity, the facility will open its doors to the public, December 6.
The aquarium was unveiled in late October to over 200 guests in the Steele Ocean Sciences building at Dalhousie University, but the species needed time to climatize to their new environment.
We spoke with Don Bercovici, CEO of The Discovery Centre, who told us through email in November, they were putting the “finishing touches” on the site.
The project is in collaboration with the university and funded by Ross Beaty and his family, $8.2 million, alongside other families and seven foundations.
What you can expect
The Beaty Centre for Marine Biodiversity focuses on groundbreaking local research and is less like a traditional aquarium that has fish swimming around to classical music.
What you can expect, however, are tanks of all sizes filled with marine life native to our waters here at home.
Bercovici has told us the star attraction is the 18-metre blue whale skeleton suspended in the atrium of the building.
“The whale’s remains were discovered off the coast of Nova Scotia several years ago and the display was assembled by MARS and the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative,” said Bercovici.
Another species to watch out for is an orange and blue, bi-coloured lobster, named Claudia. According to Bercovici, she is one in 50 million.
In total there will be 30 exhibits and aquaria.
