As of January first, all adults in Iceland are organ donors. Unless they opt-out, that is.
The new ‘opt-out’ organ donation law came into effect this week in Iceland, as an attempt to boost organ donations.
Iceland made the choice to change the organ donation system from an “auto-approval” instead of an “auto-removal” after finding that less than 10% of the population were organ donors. Studies showed that many more would be willing to donate, but simply didn’t have the donor card.
Iceland joins dozens of other countries who already have the organ donation ‘opt-out’ policy. They are hoping that, with this policy change, organ donation will be considered the ‘norm’.
Do you think Canada should enforce this policy? Do you think this new law will boost organ donations?
