What once was an innocent way to unwind from a long day could now lead to unexpected charges.
Imagine this: It’s Friday. You’ve just come home from a hard day at work. You’ve had a long week, and you’re ready to unwind with a couple cold ones. That decision could soon mean some pretty hefty consequences.
Canada’s revised laws on impaired driving could allow police to demand breath samples from people in pubs, restaurants, and even at home. These revisions could also mean that you could be in violation of the impaired driving laws even two hours after you’ve been driving.
Under current laws police officers need to have a “reasonable suspicion” the driver had consumed alcohol, however, with the new laws, an officer could demand a breath sample from anyone at any time.
It is believed that this reform will result in fewer accidents and deaths relating to impaired driving. However, there are mixed opinions, including those from criminal lawyers, who feel that this reform could also result in unfair arrests.
