Caroll Spinney, the puppeteer who brought beloved “Sesame Street” characters Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch to life, died yesterday at the age of 85.
He passed away at his Connecticut home after battling dystonia which causes involuntary muscle contractions.
Although he grew up in Massachusetts, the legendary puppeteer had a Maritime connection: His father was born in New Brunswick and his mother grew up in Cape Breton.
Spinney wasn’t a household name, but many people considered him an artistic genius.
