In the season 18 premiere of American Idol, judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and host Ryan Seacrest all returned, and traveled across the U.S. offering auditions to hopefuls looking for their ticket to Hollywood, USA Today reports. A garbageman from Mobile, Alabama, named Douglas Kiker kicked off the show with a bang, wowing the judges with a pretty version of “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts. Kiker revealed that he didn’t have a lot of musical experience, but wanted to do the show to impress his 3-year-old-daughter. “You just stay who you are, and you’re going to go so far, and you’re going to take your daughter with you,” Perry said while giving him his ticket to Hollywood.
