The NHL’s Colorado Avalanche picked Halifax Mooseheads Captain Justin Barron in the first round last night.
He grew up in the Halifax Hawks system and played for the Halifax Mac’s before becoming a Halifax Moosehead star defenceman.

The Avs have a history with players who have connections to the Mooseheads, most notably Nathan MacKinnon, Alex Tanguay and J-S Giguere.
Barron, the Mooseheads Captain, is the reigning Most Valuable Player for Halifax and becomes the 12th player, and first defenceman from the organization to be taken in the first round of the NHL Draft. The Halifax, NS native joined the Herd as the 13th overall pick in the 2017 QMJHL Entry Draft and has scored 81 points in 154 career games while maintaining a +/- of +41. He scored a career high 41 points in his second season to help the Mooseheads reach the Memorial Cup Final. He tallied 13 points in the 2019 President Cup Playoffs.
The soon-to-be 19-year-old has yet to play this season after undergoing a corrective medical procedure last month to prevent the reoccurance of blood clots which forced him to miss a large chunk of the 2019-20 season.
The 2020 NHL Entry Draft continues on Wednesday at 11:30AM ET with rounds 2-7 where fellow Mooseheads teammates Senna Peeters and Elliot Desnoyers will have a chance to hear their names called by an NHL team. Good luck fellas.
Congrats Justin from Hot Country 1035!
