The President of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union says they were not consulted ahead of the province’s announcement schools in Halifax Regional Municipality and Sydney will reopen this week.
Premier Iain Rankin announced last week students would return to in-person learning in Nova Scotia on June 2nd, except in HRM and Sydney.
That changed in an update on Monday with Rankin saying all schools in the province will reopen by Thursday after consultation with health professionals and because of falling COVID-19 numbers.
In a message sent to NSTU members, Paul Wozney says he cannot provide more clarity right now as the union was not part of those discussions.
“I’m sure everyone is experiencing a lot of mixed emotions and frustration right now,” Wozney said in the message posted to Facebook. “The government has broken commitments it made to families and to you, and as a result you don’t know what to expect over the coming days and next 3 weeks.”
Wozney says further details may be slow to come as the government did not adequately prepare for the reopening.
He says the NSTU will support its members and provide further updates when available.
