A staple in the Halifax restaurant scene is closing its doors after 40 years in business.
The owners of Athens on Quinpool Road shared the news in a post on their website.
It appears the family restaurant will serve their final Greek dish later this summer.
“From the day my parents opened the first Athens on Barrington Street in 1982, it has been our great pleasure to serve the people of Halifax. We have met countless wonderful people and developed some lifelong friendships that we will always cherish. “ says the post from owner Evangelos Panopolis, the son of original owners Sam and Areti.
The restaurant has been in its current location on Quinpool Road since 2008.
“From Barrington Street to our two homes on Quinpool Road, my parents have always been part of the day-to-day operations. They are now in their 80s and it is time for them to take a break,” said Panopolis.
No word on when exactly Athens will close permanently.
“As for me, I look forward to spending more time with my family as I consider my next path. We will have more details to share with you in the coming weeks but, in the meantime, we are looking forward to a sunny summer on the patio and serving you again as our long adventure winds down.”
